CDBG grant FAQ
What is a CDBG grant?
The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program is a HUD-funded program that provides annual grants to states, cities, and counties to develop viable communities — primarily by providing decent housing, a suitable living environment, and expanded economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income people. Entitlement communities and states re-grant the funds to local governments and nonprofits.
Who can apply for CDBG funding?
CDBG funds flow from HUD to states and entitlement cities/counties, which then award them to local governments, public agencies, and nonprofit organizations carrying out eligible activities — affordable housing, public facilities and infrastructure, public services, and economic development. Eligibility and application windows are set locally, so the right opportunity depends on your jurisdiction.
What can CDBG grants pay for?
Eligible activities include housing rehabilitation, public infrastructure (water, sewer, streets, ADA improvements), community and senior centers, public services for low- and moderate-income residents, and economic development that creates or retains jobs. Each activity must meet a national objective, most commonly benefiting low- and moderate-income people.
When are CDBG applications due?
Most CDBG funding is awarded on local cycles set by each state or entitlement community, so deadlines vary by jurisdiction. Browse the open opportunities below for current deadlines, or run your organization's profile through FindGrants to see the CDBG and community-development grants you qualify for right now.
